Enrollment figures show more than 1.7 million K-12 students in Georgia public schools, the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report found. Elementary grades reported the highest enrollment, with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle school at 388,733 (22.7%), and high school totals at 539,092 students (31.4%).
Following the pandemic, chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant concern in Georgia schools, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. The GaDOE responded with a statewide effort that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness initiatives and targeted help for districts with high needs to improve daily attendance.
In 2025, Georgia lawmakers approved a bill updating school attendance regulations to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation introduced additional reporting requirements and coordinates with programs that provide alternate diploma pathways.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, beating the national average of 15:1.
