Chronic absenteeism remains a serious post-pandemic issue in Georgia, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE launched a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness campaigns, and additional supports for districts in greatest need.
In 2025, legislation in Georgia updated school attendance policies to prohibit expulsion for absenteeism alone. The law also introduced new reporting rules and aligned with programs offering alternative diploma pathways.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was around 14:1, better than the nationwide average of 15:1.
