Allatoona High School junior Wesleigh Myers and Campbell High School senior Rajat Shirur were named Athletes of the Week by Cobb Athletics on April 2. The award recognizes student-athletes who excel both in their sports and academics.
The Athlete of the Week honor highlights students who achieve success in athletics, maintain strong academic performance, and contribute to their communities. The recognition is supported by BSN Sports.
Myers helped lead Allatoona’s girls’ golf team to its first-ever first-place finish at a tournament, shooting a score of 77 that also earned her the girls’ low score award. She participates in several clubs, including Athletic Leadership and Key Club. Her coach, Joe Lanier, said, “She is the leader of the team, not only in scoring, but in work ethic. She works hard in practice and on her own to improve and grow in the sport. She is very easy to coach, and the team follows her lead.” Lanier added: “She is a delight to coach and be around. I coach her the same way I coach the boys. You do not have to sugarcoat things with her; she is one of the most coachable girls I have had.”
Shirur has maintained an undefeated record this season for Campbell’s boys’ tennis team as they secured top seed status for Region 3-6A playoffs following a win over Harrison High School. He is ranked fourth nationally among high school tennis players and first in Georgia while participating in Campbell’s International Baccalaureate Program; he plans to attend Northwestern University next fall. His coach Zachary Hall said: “No one in the state is more valuable to their team than Rajat. He is the hardest-working player and best leader I’ve ever coached. He’s a great teammate, leader, competitor, student, and athlete. I cannot speak highly enough about him.” Hall continued: “He has helped Campbell have the best seasons in school history… As a leader he sets the tone at practice and matches… I am a better coach because of Rajat and his impact on the Campbell tennis program.”
Allatoona High School recognizes scholar-athletes with cumulative GPAs above 3.5 according to its official website. The school serves grades nine through twelve as part of Cobb County School District according to its official website. It offers advanced placement courses along with work-based learning programs as well as community service opportunities according to its official website.
