Across Cobb County, students participated in Read Across Cobb, an annual event aimed at promoting literacy and encouraging a love of reading. The initiative is the district’s local version of the national Read Across America celebration and involves guest readers, educators, and community leaders visiting classrooms to share stories with students.
Throughout the week, schools organized activities centered on reading. Special guests visited classrooms to emphasize the importance of books and how they can broaden horizons for students.
Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, along with other district leaders and board members, read to students in various schools. “That’s the magic behind Read Across Cobb, the districtwide celebration of literacy that brings guest readers, educators, and community leaders into classrooms to share their favorite stories and inspire a lifelong love of reading,” according to the district. The statement continued: “The annual event is Cobb Schools’ local spin on the national Read Across America celebration, honoring the power of books and the opportunities they create for students.”
Superintendent Ragsdale visited Hayes Elementary School for a reading session. Board Chair Randy Scamihorn read at Kennesaw Elementary School. Board Vice Chair David Chastain visited Garrison Mill, Shallowford Falls, Mountain View, Addison, and Rocky Mount elementary schools during the week. Board members Nichelle Davis and Becky Saylor brought stories to Argyle, Smyrna, Belmont Hills, Green Acres, Norton Park, Brumby, Russell, Sedalia Park, Birney, LaBelle, and Milford elementary schools. John Cristadoro and Brad Wheeler read at Tritt, Murdock, Timber Ridge, Hollydale, Mount Bethel, East Side, Varner, Eastvalley, Still, Kemp, Vaughan and Due West elementary schools.
The district highlighted its commitment to literacy as a foundation for student success. “Reading strengthens critical thinking builds knowledge and supports learning across every subject. But just as important it helps students develop curiosity about the world around them. That curiosity fuels innovation creativity and problem-solving skills,” stated officials.
Events like Read Across Cobb are intended not only to promote reading but also to show how partnerships between schools and communities can support education.
