In the first episode of the 2025-26 school year, Cobb Schools Director of Athletics Don Baker discussed current trends and developments in district athletics. Baker shared that athletic participation is on the rise both nationally and within Cobb County, with more students joining sports due to increased options and opportunities.

Brad McBrayer, a member of the district’s sports reporting team, spoke about his experiences covering local sports. He highlighted not only the competitive spirit but also the compassion and care he has observed as both a graduate and parent in Cobb.

Cobb County School District includes over 16 high schools, supporting a wide range of athletic talent across various sports. The podcast noted that student involvement in athletics has grown significantly since the pandemic, mirroring national patterns.

Flag football and esports were identified as rapidly expanding activities that have helped boost student engagement in athletics. The district recently introduced the AD Impact Award to recognize the contributions of athletic directors across Cobb schools.

Additionally, Pope High School’s football field was renamed Matt Hobby Field to honor individuals who have made significant impacts on youth sports in the community. To further ensure student safety, Cobb County now holds a 20-minute emergency action meeting before sporting events to improve preparedness and response efforts.
