Students in Cobb County School District have outperformed state averages in every subject and grade level on the latest Georgia Milestones assessments, according to recently released results. The district also led the metro Atlanta area in several key academic categories.

Cobb’s performance reflects its focus on academic achievement and providing choices for families. There were notable gains in science and math, as well as strong reading outcomes in important grade levels.

“For the 10th year in a row, Cobb’s return on the taxpayer’s investment can be seen in this year’s Milestones results. Providing parents with some of the highest results, at one of the lowest costs, is something we are committed to. The staff is looking at other opportunities to grow and give parents even more options – I am very sure we will,” said Cobb Schools Board Chair David Chastain.

In metro Atlanta comparisons, Cobb students ranked first among districts in American Literature, Math grades 6-8, Algebra, Biology, and U.S. History. In all 20 Milestones Assessments reviewed across the region, Cobb students placed within the top three when not ranked first. The district also led metro Atlanta for math and social studies (Levels 2–4), surpassing others by over 23 percentage points in social studies.

Cobb showed significant improvement in science scores: eighth-grade physical science scores exceeded the state average by 17 percentage points with further growth from last year; eighth-grade science increased by 5.1 percentage points; fifth-grade science rose by 2.2 percentage points; high school Algebra I scores went up by 2.5 percentage points; and proficiency for eighth-grade Algebra I reached 99.8%, an increase from last year.

New immersive learning tools like Prisms have contributed to improved science performance by providing real-world experiences for students at select middle and high schools. A new Innovation and Technology Academy is being built at Allatoona High School to offer pathways focused on STEM subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Aviation, Healthcare, and Game Design.

Despite statewide declines in English Language Arts (ELA) scores—including a dip within Cobb—the district maintained higher performance levels with increases noted in key grades: seventh-grade ELA rose by 1.7 percentage points; seventh-grade reading on grade level increased by 2.6 percentage points; American Literature topped metro Atlanta while outperforming the state by nine percentage points.

During the past school year, Cobb adjusted its ELA approach to meet new requirements under the Georgia Literacy Act—implementing changes to assessments, resources, coaching practices, and standards—and plans further expansion of literacy initiatives next year.

Cobb also stood out in social studies and history assessments: U.S. History scores surpassed both metro Atlanta districts and state averages by substantial margins; American Literature and Biology earned top regional rankings; eighth-grade social studies exceeded state averages by eight percentage points.

The district credits these outcomes to collaborative efforts aimed at supporting student success throughout its schools.
