Cobb’s director of assessment and personalized learning, Lori Horn, discussed summer learning opportunities in an episode of The Inside Scoop podcast released on April 30. Host David Owen spoke with Horn about programs available for students from kindergarten through high school.

The discussion focused on academic support and credit recovery to help students stay prepared for the next grade level or make up failed courses. Elementary and middle school programs are designed to ensure readiness for advancement, while high school credit recovery allows students to retake classes they did not pass.

Horn said that registration procedures differ by program, with high school credit recovery registration open until May 22 to allow for late needs. She also said transportation, meals, and attendance policies will be consistent with those during the regular school year. Parents are encouraged to communicate with their child’s school and review available resources.

Pitner Elementary School is one example of a Cobb County institution offering educational support over the summer. According to the official website, Pitner Elementary School features a community noted for caring support, diversity and commitment among staff and families. The same source states that Pitner honors Harmon Wayne “Buck” Pitner, a former Cobb County Board of Education member. It fosters respectful, responsible and empowered individuals according to its official website. Some staff members have served since its early years after opening in 2003 at 4575 Wade Green Road in Acworth, Georgia.

Pitner offers education while building foundations for lifelong learning through a supportive community featuring committed staff and eager students who create a positive environment according to the official website.

Horn said education happens year-round in Cobb County Schools: “It is an excellent opportunity to prepare for next year or make up needed classes.”

Looking ahead, district officials say these summer options can help more students remain engaged academically throughout the break.
