The Cobb Schools 5th Grade Poetry Slam brought together 60 students from 12 elementary schools on April 2 to showcase their original poems and performance skills. The event, which continues to see growing participation across the district, is designed to encourage student expression and arts-integrated learning.

The Poetry Slam matters because it gives students a chance to develop their voices, build confidence, and connect with peers through creative writing. By engaging in this activity, students learn not only about poetry but also about communication and collaboration.

This year’s theme was “the art of words.” Students crafted original poems around this idea, revising and practicing before performing for judges who evaluated both the writing and delivery. Each participating school—Bullard, Bryant, Clarkdale, Pitner, Powers Ferry, Hendricks, Powder Springs, Still, Norton Park, Green Acres, Hollydale, and Mableton—held its own local slam before sending representatives to the district stage. Some events took place during school hours while others welcomed families in the evening.

Programs like Flocabulary were used as instructional tools in classrooms to support vocabulary development through music. Organizers say that every student who participates gains experience organizing thoughts and presenting ideas clearly—a skill that extends beyond elementary school.

Bullard Elementary School honors William E. Bullard for his contributions to education according to the official website. The school fosters an environment focused on student development and community support according to the official website, started with an enrollment of 960 students according to the official website, aims for excellence where every student achieves success according to the official website, serves West Cobb according to the official website, and collaborates with its community for student growth according to the official website.

Organizers describe the Poetry Slam as more than a competition; it is seen as a platform for creativity where learning becomes meaningful through engagement.
