Soccer teams from Cobb County schools advanced to the second round of the Georgia High School Association State Soccer Championships, according to an April 28 report. Twelve out of eighteen boys and girls varsity squads moved forward after a series of dominant wins, including nine shutouts and several high-scoring games.
The strong performance comes as local interest in soccer rises ahead of the United States hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Allatoona High School participated in both boys and girls brackets, with the girls team securing a decisive 10-0 victory while the boys narrowly lost their match. Other Cobb teams also had notable results. Kennesaw Mountain’s boys won their match by ten goals, with senior Nathan Leveque breaking his school’s single-season goal record. The Pope Greyhounds’ boys and Lassiter’s girls also secured wins to continue their playoff runs. Coaches highlighted both excitement and challenges ahead: “It’s always nice to get a first-round playoff win,” said Kennesaw Mountain coach Daniel DePlanche, “but we are realistic and realize that the next round will be a much harder game.”
In Class 6A play, Campbell defeated Wheeler while Walton bested Osborne; coaches praised their players’ mentality and effort throughout challenging matches. “We grew up a lot tonight,” said Osborne coach Aaron Foster about his young team’s growth despite elimination.
