Darren Charles Waller was born on September 13, 1992, in Landover, Maryland, to Dorian and Charlena Waller. He grew up in Colorado Springs, Marietta, and Acworth, Georgia. Waller was always athletic and stood out in sports from a young age. He attended Georgia Tech, where he played college football as a wide receiver. His talent earned him a spot in the NFL when the Baltimore Ravens selected him in the 2015 draft.
His early professional career was marked by struggles with substance abuse. Waller overcame these challenges and found a new role as a tight end with the Oakland Raiders in 2018. He quickly became one of the league’s top tight ends, setting multiple records and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2020. Waller had a standout 2020 season, finishing with 107 receptions, 1,196 yards, and 9 touchdowns.
Despite his success, Waller faced personal struggles. His addiction to oxycodone and alcohol began in his teens. He overcame this after completing a rehabilitation program and dedicated his life to helping others through the Darren Waller Foundation.
Waller was traded to the New York Giants in 2023, where he continued to play before retiring in 2024. His story of overcoming addiction and finding success in football has inspired many. Waller’s connection to Acworth remains strong, and it is there that he spent significant parts of his formative years.
