Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre (GMDT), housed in the studios of the Marietta Square’s own Georgia Dance Conservatory, is ready to kick-off the holiday season with beauty and grace! Right after Thanksgiving, as it has for 66 years, the full company takes the stage at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in Cobb County with the timeless favorite The Nutcracker.
The 2022/23 GMDT company is comprised of 125 students ranging in age from seven years-old to graduating high school seniors who train at Georgia Dance Conservatory (GDC) on the Marietta Square.

Visions of sugar plums, waltzing flowers and dancing snowflakes all come to life in this captivating classic, GMDT’s The Nutcracker. The show will once again feature the brilliant sets, costumes, and special effects that spark awe and wonder alongside Tchaïkovsky’s glorious music. GMDT’s The Nutcracker also welcomes back professional dancers D Patton White as Godfather Drosselmeyer and Mother Ginger; Raul Peinado as Mr. Stahlbaum, Snow King, and Firebird; Alex Gonzaga as Sugar Plum Cavalier; and returning GMDT alum Jarrod Harrel as Nutcracker Prince.

“GMDT’s The Nutcracker marks the beginning of the holiday season for our dancers and families, and getting to be the first Nutcracker in Marietta means that we also get to kick off the holiday season for our audience members as well,” said Ashleigh Whitworth, artistic director for GMDT. “Ours is a family tradition for many, and we love to see new and familiar faces at the shows with everyone dressed up in their holiday best.”
Whitworth also noted that this year’s production will premiere new choreography for Waltz of the Snowflakes and Waltz of the Flowers.
“These are two of the most iconic scenes in the entire ballet, and I think the audiences will enjoy a fresh new take on both scenes,” added Whitworth. “This year’s Waltz of the Flowers will also see brand new corps de ballet costumes, so it’s going to be a real treat!”
