Chronic absenteeism continues to pose significant challenges in Georgia, with 20.7% of students absent for 10% or more of their school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education data. In response, the GaDOE implemented statewide strategies such as a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness effort, and targeted interventions for high-need districts aimed at increasing attendance rates.
Georgia legislators approved updates to school attendance laws in 2025, prohibiting expulsion solely because of absences. The law sets new reporting mandates and coordinates with efforts enabling students to earn diplomas through nontraditional routes.
By 2026, the state recorded an average student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 14:1, which is more favorable than the nationwide average of 15:1.
