The Pebblebrook Falcons secured a narrow victory over the South Cobb Eagles in a closely contested football game, known as the “Battle of the Nest,” held in Austell. Both teams entered the matchup with identical 2-5 records and were seeking to improve their standings in Region 3-6A, with playoff implications on the line.
The rivalry between Pebblebrook and South Cobb dates back to the mid-1960s and is considered an important event for local bragging rights. This year’s game was marked by strong defensive play and multiple lead changes. The Eagles scored first, but the Falcons quickly responded. By halftime, Pebblebrook led 13-6.
South Cobb tied the game in the third quarter, setting up a tense final period. The Eagles regained the lead with a rushing touchdown, but Pebblebrook answered to tie the score at 20-20. Regulation ended with both teams deadlocked, leading to overtime.
The contest extended into three overtime periods before Pebblebrook clinched the win with a successful two-point conversion. The Eagles’ subsequent pass attempt was incomplete, giving the Falcons a 22-20 victory and improving their record to 3-5. With another win over Paulding County on Friday, Pebblebrook now has an opportunity to secure a playoff spot in Region 3-6A.
Despite the loss, South Cobb showed improvement over previous seasons. After not winning any games for three years, their two victories this season mark progress for the program.
“Thanks for a great game, Eagles and Falcons!”
