Pebblebrook High School Principal Dr. Dana Giles announced on April 22 the launch of Project Joy, a new initiative aimed at supporting students’ mental health and fostering positive connections among young women.
The program comes at a time when teen anxiety and mental health are significant concerns for schools. The goal of Project Joy is to provide uplifting experiences that encourage reflection, celebration, and empowerment for students.
Dr. Giles entrusted educators Nia Davis, Alicia Lawyer, and Cherisse Thompson with bringing the initiative to life in its first year. “Students participate in four key events during the spring semester,” said Thompson, who serves as Pebblebrook’s Cross Country Head Coach and Athletic Coordinator. “All of these are centered around spreading joy and building meaningful connections.” The events include Jump for Joy at a trampoline park in February; March for Joy—a march around the school and community in March; Care for Joy (Community), where students visit an assisted living facility in April; and Care for Joy (Self), focused on self-care activities in May.
Thompson said participation has already had an impact: “Students are learning the importance of spreading joy, showing appreciation, and building connections despite differences. They are sharing their experiences, supporting one another, and growing in confidence.” During this year’s March for Joy event, 45 students joined teachers to carry signs with affirmations throughout campus and into the local community while being accompanied by the school band.
“The march traveled throughout the school, around the perimeter of the campus,” Thompson said. “It truly felt like the entire school came together. Our hope is that the girls recognize that support and continue to carry that spirit of joy forward.” Dr. Giles added: “It is a movement… It is a visible reminder that joy is not just a feeling, but a choice, a practice, and a source of strength. Through encouragement, sisterhood, and shared experiences, participants are inspired to embrace their worth…”
Pebblebrook High School supports athletic programs through donations according to its official website. The school also serves students from Mableton as part of Cobb County School District according to its official website—and hosts performing arts presentations through its center for excellence.According to its official website, Pebblebrook includes multiple gyms with facilities updated over time including a new gymnasium added in 1997.
Coach Thompson concluded: “Project Joy reinforces that joy is something you both give and receive,” she said,“and through that students are beginning to truly spread their wings.”
