Chronic absenteeism continues to affect Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of days in 2024. In response, the Georgia Department of Education has implemented a statewide effort that features a real-time attendance dashboard, a statewide public awareness campaign, and focused support for districts with higher needs to improve daily attendance. See the state initiative here.
In 2025, Georgia legislators updated attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also set new reporting rules and complements programs helping students obtain diplomas through alternate pathways.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was roughly 14:1, an improvement over the U.S. average of 15:1.
