South Cobb High School student Anabella Alvarado has been awarded first place in the 2025 Youth Across America Hope Film Competition. Alvarado received a $1,000 grand prize, which she will share with her teacher. Her short film, “My Brother,” explores themes of family separation and hope for reunion after adoption.
The competition is organized by Hope Givers, a nonprofit that aims to promote hope, resilience, and equity among young people through storytelling. According to Hope Givers, its mission is to “save lives through arts, science, and advocacy,” using student narratives as a means for social change and healing. Alvarado’s film was selected from hundreds of entries submitted by students across the country.
The annual event included screenings of finalist and honorable mention films. The challenge is now in its fourth year and accepts submissions from middle and high school students working under the guidance of mentors at their schools. The program supports values such as Humanity, Opportunity, Prevention, and Equity.
Several other South Cobb students also received recognition at the event. Joseph Hernandez, Miguel, and Erick were named semi-finalists for their film “Giving Hope with Joe.” Their achievement includes a field trip to Trilith Studios in Georgia.
“Congratulations to Anabella for being recognized for her filmmaking skills and storytelling! Well done, South Cobb Video and Film students!”
