Each week, Cobb County School District recognizes student-athletes for their achievements in sports, academics, and community involvement. Supported by BSN Sports, the Athlete of the Week program highlights students who stand out both on and off the field.

This week’s honorees are Ian Hulbert from Sprayberry High School and Janie Myers from Walton High School.

Ian Hulbert is a junior at Sprayberry High School and plays multiple positions on the Yellow Jacket football team. The current team has become the highest-scoring in Sprayberry’s 70-year football history. Ian is also involved in track and field during the spring season.

“Ian is a hard worker, and he has bought into our team concept of putting the team first,” said his coach, Pete Fominaya. “We asked him to play multiple positions, and he is willing and able to do whatever the team needs.”

Coach Fominaya further noted Ian’s influence beyond athletics: “He is a leader on our campus and a great student. We are very proud of Ian and he is very deserving of this award.”

Janie Myers plays volleyball for Walton High School. She was named MVP by GHSA after Walton’s recent state championship win over Alpharetta. During that match, she recorded her 1,000th career set despite being only a sophomore. Janie plays as a hitter but can fill any position as needed.

“Janie is an incredible leader for our team,” said Raider Head Coach Ashley Jones. “Being a setter is a huge responsibility, and there are a lot of decisions to make. As a sophomore, it is impressive how much command Janie has of the offense. She reads the opposing defense well and makes smart choices about which hitter to set at the right time to generate the most out of our offense.”

Coach Jones added: “We are very fortunate to have several seniors on the team. Janie does a great job of respecting the older leadership while also finding her own voice. Janie is incredibly talented and hardworking, and her parents are very kind people who are super supportive of the whole program. I am excited to see what else she can accomplish in the next two years at Walton! I am sure great things from her are still to come.”
