Construction will begin in South Georgia on a new solar energy project, set to be the biggest so far in the Southeast.
Located in South Georgia’s rural Lee County, the project will have enough to power 47,000 homes, with a 3,000 acre coverage and 250 megawatts of electricity produced, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted Wednesday, sharing a link to the article and expressing his enthusiasm for the solar energy initiative. "This afternoon, Marty and I were in Lee County to announce a significant investment by @SiliconRanchCo, @GreenPowerEMC and Walton EMC to construct a solar farm which will create jobs, produce clean energy and benefit the surrounding community. Great work!’’ Kemp wrote in his tweet.
According to the release, the first phase of the project will be run by Silicon Ranch —the solar energy operation for Shell. It will serve Walton EMC and support Facebook operations in Georgia.
Expected to include about half a million solar panels, this initial phase of the Desoto Solar Farm project is set to be completed in December of 2022.
As an added benefit, the first phase will put to work more than 400 people, according to the article. Two additional phases are planned.
