Cobb County police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the driver that killed a 7-year-old girl in a hit-and-run crash earlier this month.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the girl had autism and left her home in one of the several subdivisions in the area without her parents knowing. She apparently was walking partially on New McEver Road near McEver Woods Drive about 10:15 p.m. Jan. 9 when she was struck by a car traveling in the eastbound lane. The driver departed the scene but left evidence.
Sgt. Wayne Delk of the Cobb County Police Department told Fox 5 Atlanta the evidence includes possible glass shards from a headlight assembly. “Our investigators believe that either one or both headlights are heavily damaged," Delk said.
In addition, investigators also found a University of Alabama vanity plate that read: “Rammer Jammer.” This plate was attached to the front of the car.
The young girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's very unfortunate," Delk told Fox 5. "It's a sad situation for them. I think most parents have had nightmares similar to this. In a case like this when you have a hit-and-run it's disconcerting for the public that someone wouldn't stay especially with a child this young."
A sign has been posted at the site about the accident explaining what happened and a number to call for those who might have some information. Nearby residents are also being asked to examine any footage from their security video that might help.
Anyone with any information about the crash should contact investigators at 770-499-3987.
