COBB SCHOOLS: South Cobb Eagles Soar at Black College Expo

Event

Cobb Schools issued the following announcement on Apr. 11.

South Cobb High School recently partnered with the men from the Sigma Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. to transport students to the Black College Expo at the Cobb Galleria. The Expo had more than 40 colleges and universities in attendance.

While at the Expo, students spoke directly with college representatives and had their application fees waived. Seniors received acceptance letters at the Expo, and some even were awarded scholarships to the schools they were interested in attending.

Thomas Smith, a Special Education teacher at South Cobb, coordinated the event and was pleased with the overall outcome of the trip. Mr. Smith helped to chaperone the event, along with fellow Eagle teacher Jacqui Valentine and school counselor Deadra Freeman.

“We had a handful of our Juniors and Seniors from THE South Cobb High School attend this year and look forward to having more attend next year,” said Mr. Smith. “I plan to make this an annual opportunity for our students to capitalize on.”

Each of the seniors brought a packet with their transcripts and test scores, and some even included their resumes. All seniors who attended were accepted to over five schools collectively, with a minimum of four acceptances each. In addition, several were awarded scholarships on the spot.

“We had a blast, and our students represented well,” said Ms. Freeman excitedly. “They had a plan, they asked excellent questions, they were attentive, and YES, they were ready!”

Some of the colleges and universities that South Cobb students will be attending next year include South Carolina State University, Fort Valley State University, Alabama A & M, Stillman College, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Dillard University, St. Augustine University, Bethune Cookman University, Voorhees College, and West Virginia State University.

Congratulations to all the Eagle seniors that made connections and decisions at the Expo! As your high school careers wind down and your college experience begins, we know you will continue to make Cobb Schools proud. Great job, South Cobb!
