Chief Orrin Scott Hamilton has officially been sworn in to head the Austell Police Department as the first Black police chief in Cobb County history.

Hamilton was sworn in Friday at Austell's Threadmill Complex, a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta said.

"My vision for the City of Austell Police Department is to ensure our department is reflective of the community we serve," Hamilton said in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta. "Community engagement and involvement is important to the mission."

With nearly three decades as a member of law enforcement under his belt, Hamilton started his career with the Cobb County Police Department as a uniform police officer; FOX 5 reported. Since that time, the Cordele, Georgia, native has spent more than two decades serving Cobb County in a number of high-ranking positions including interim chief of the Cobb County Police Department in 2019 when former Chief of Police Tim Co retired. He also serves as chairman of the Cobb Police Athletic League, a nonprofit that uses sports and mentorship to fight juvenile crime.

Hamilton has been married to his wife Karsandra for 32 years. They have three children and two grandchildren.
