Scammers are attempting to take advantage of a tragedy that left two deputies dead in a recent shooting.
Cobb County Sheriff’s Deputy Marshall Samuel Ervin, Jr., and Deputy Jonathan Randall Koleski were killed while attempting to serve a warrant at a Marietta-area home Sept. 8.
"Since this tragedy occurred, the support has been overwhelming," Robert Haley, founder, and chairman of the Cobb Sheriff’s Foundation, told Fox 5 Atlanta. "However, if a criminal sees an opportunity, especially when money is involved, they’re going to take advantage of it."
The foundation has raised more than $50,000 for the families of the fallen officers, Fox 5 reported.
Haley said he recently met with the widows of both officers and presented them checks for $10,000 each to cover expenses, according to Fox 5. Haley also said the organization will also cover funeral expenses.
Foundation officials are imploring people to notify authorities of any fundraisers they come across for the officers that are not associated with the organization, Fox 5 reported.
Haley said the foundation will work with the families to make sure their needs are met.
