On Wednesday, March 8, City Council recognized Marietta’s Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department for receiving the Tree City USA award from the Georgia Forestry Commission for the 39th consecutive year. Marietta is the second oldest Tree City in the State of Georgia.
The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA.
To become a Tree City USA, Marietta must have a tree board or department. This role is filled by the Marietta Tree Keepers which is non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to public education, planting, preserving, and protecting trees in the City. Additionally, Marietta has a certified Arborist who oversees the management of trees on City parks and right of ways. The Arborist is also a resource for general information to the public and education to other governmental city agencies and nonprofit groups.
Marietta must maintain a tree ordinance as part of the City’s zonings code. All development within the city must follow guidelines established by the ordinance. The City also maintains an Arbor Day observation and proclamation. Each year the Marietta Tree Keepers host a tree giveaway at the Marietta Farmers Market in celebration of Arbor Day.
