U.S. Representative Rich McCormick (R-GA) has called for the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, citing the entry of a number equivalent to 13 congressional districts' worth of undocumented immigrants under the current administration. His comments are in response to what officials describe as an escalating border crisis, with over 300,000 migrant encounters reported in December alone and a significant rate of migrant releases into the U.S. interior.
Representative McCormick was quoted saying, "13 congressional districts worth of illegal immigrants are now in our country thanks to this administration," and followed it up with a call to action: "IMPEACH MAYORKAS & SECURE THE BORDER."
According to Fox News, December 2023 saw what officials termed a record-breaking influx at the Southern border, with more than 12,600 migrant encounters in one day. Facilities were reportedly housing over 5,300 individuals at times, exceeding capacity by 260%. The Tucson Sector in Arizona recorded over 3,000 encounters, leading Governor Katie Hobbs to deploy the National Guard. Throughout FY23, an unprecedented 2.4 million encounters were registered at the border, peaking notably in September and October. This upward trend continued into November and December - typically slower months - where agents frequently encountered over 10,000 individuals daily. Additionally, around 670,000 "gotaways" were reported in FY23 while Department of Homeland Security officials disclosed that approximately 5,000 illegal immigrants were being released daily to non-governmental organizations.

CBS News reports that House Republicans are advancing their bid to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border crisis. The House Homeland Security Committee is set to hold its initial hearing featuring testimony from attorneys general of Montana, Oklahoma and Missouri. The focus is expected to center on Mayorkas' impact on states following Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's earlier effort to force a vote on the matter, accusing Mayorkas of violating federal law and the Constitution by failing to ensure border control.
In response to the impeachment hearing, a DHS memo stated, "Instead of working in a bipartisan way to fix our broken immigration laws, the House Majority is wasting time on baseless and pointless political attacks by trying to impeach Secretary Mayorkas," as reported by CBS News.
Fox News reported that New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed concerns last week, describing the city as being at a "breaking point" due to the arrival of approximately 161,000 migrants since spring 2022 from Texas. In response, Adams issued an executive order limiting bus drop-offs for migrants. However, a reported "loophole" allowed some migrants to be transported to New Jersey train stations.
