As a school district known for excellence in teaching and learning, Cobb Schools highlights the significant role of its custodial staff. These individuals are crucial to the daily operations of the schools, ensuring that over 105,000 students have a clean and safe environment.
The custodial team, comprising 643 members, is responsible for maintaining classrooms, lobbies, offices, cafeterias, media centers, gyms, and restrooms. They also address safety concerns and assist with various tasks such as deliveries and garden care. Their efforts extend beyond regular hours to support school events.
For many students in Cobb Schools, custodians are familiar faces who offer greetings and support throughout the day. Mark Johnson from Pine Mountain Middle School is recognized as a valued member of his school community. Similarly, Clarence Hayes at Fair Oaks Elementary School engages with students by reading to them in the media center.
In 2024, about 20 custodians received recognition as their school's Classified Employee of the Year. Some have dedicated over thirty years to Cobb Schools and continue their work during summer breaks by deep cleaning facilities in preparation for the new academic year.
Governor Brian Kemp acknowledged the vital contributions of school custodians by allocating funds for a one-time $1,000 bonus in Georgia’s FY 2025 state budget. This bonus will be given to full-time and part-time custodians working between November 28 and December 11, 2024.
Cobb Schools Board Member David Chastain stated: “Every school is led by invisible leaders who make school special every day. Custodians play a vital role in the success of every event and class and are a huge part of student learning. We don’t thank them often enough.”
With the holiday season approaching, there is an opportunity to show appreciation for these essential workers within Cobb Schools.
