The Walton Raiders and McEachern Indians met at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on August 19, 2025, as part of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. This annual event marks the start of Georgia’s high school football season, with its final games played at a professional venue and broadcast to a wide audience.

Both teams entered the matchup after first-round exits from last year’s GHSA playoffs and were seeking a strong start to their new seasons. The game drew attention as it featured two Cobb County schools facing each other, giving local fans an anticipated east versus west showdown.

The first half was closely contested. McEachern scored an early touchdown, but Walton responded with a field goal and then took the lead after recovering an onside kick for another score. However, McEachern quickly regained momentum by returning the following kickoff for a touchdown and added a field goal before halftime to lead 16-10.

In the second half, McEachern dominated offensively, outscoring Walton 34-7 and securing a 50-17 victory. The performance has set up anticipation for McEachern’s next game against North Cobb Warriors on August 22 at Dorsey Field.

“This game validated my message that great practices are the key to our success,” said Coach Kareem Reid. “It’s not what we do, it’s how intentional we are with our preparation.”

Looking ahead to their upcoming opponent, Coach Reid stated his approach would remain unchanged: “It will be the same as always. It’s about us mastering our scheme and executing the fundamentals and details,” he said.

Reflecting on his team’s showing in their season opener, Coach Reid highlighted both positive aspects and areas needing improvement: “We were very physical and played with great energy and effort,” he said. “But we missed some scoring opportunities offensively and gave up a couple of explosive plays through the air on defense. So we want to get that cleaned up.”

McEachern will play North Cobb at home on Friday night, while Walton will travel to face Lambert for their second game of the season.
