Senior small forward Colben Landrew, a standout at Wheeler High School, announced his college commitment during a live broadcast on the CBS Sports College Basketball Channel from the Douglas L. Lipscomb Gymnasium on October 15, 2025.
Before the announcement, recruiting service 247Sports identified five possible colleges for Landrew, but most experts believed Louisville and Connecticut (UConn) were the primary contenders. Landrew is ranked #2 in Georgia and #21 nationally by 247Sports.
During his televised statement, Landrew said, “As you know, I can only choose one school, but I want to say ‘thank you’ to all the coaching staffs that took the time recruiting me. With that being said, I’m going to the University of Connecticut.”
The decision was met with strong support from teammates, family members, and friends present at the gymnasium. Last season, Landrew contributed significantly to Wheeler’s basketball program by scoring 19 points in the state championship game—including his team’s final 10 points—to secure their tenth title.
Explaining his choice of UConn and its coach Dan Hurley—who has led teams to two national championships—Landrew stated: “I knew that Coach (Dan) Hurley would push me every day. It’s a winning program, and I’m a winner. I just want to win.”
Looking ahead to his senior year at Wheeler before joining UConn next fall in Storrs, Connecticut, Landrew remains focused on another successful high school season. “We’re locked in. Ready to get to the season,” he said. “Going for two-time state championship, I can’t wait.”
