This week, Cobb Athletics recognized student-athletes Ashlyn Loftin from Lassiter High School and Gavin Carstens from Wheeler High School as Athletes of the Week. The recognition highlights achievements in both swimming and esports.
Ashlyn Loftin, a senior captain for Lassiter Swim and Dive, has committed to swim at East Carolina University. At a recent Senior Meet, she achieved her goal of qualifying for every individual state event, an accomplishment that is uncommon since most swimmers specialize in fewer events. She currently holds the title of State Champion in the 100 Breaststroke. Her coach, Brittany Hughes, stated: “Ashlyn is a true leader of our team. She is positive, hardworking, and has great sportsmanship. Every girl on the team looks up to her. She is involved in several Lassiter organizations and well well-liked by her peers and teachers. She is such a delight to be around!”
Coach Hughes also noted: “She started swimming shortly before high school and has been a member of the team for the past four years. She swims year-round with the club team, Chattahoochee Gold. We are looking forward to her leadership as we head to our Region, County, and State meet!”
Gavin Carstens was recognized for his role in Wheeler High School’s inaugural esports season. According to his coach Dr. Wylie Tidwell: “Gavin has been the driving force behind the success of our inaugural esports season. While his technical skill is undeniable, it is his leadership and ability to rally his teammates that truly set him apart.”
Dr. Tidwell further commented: “In high-pressure moments, Gavin remains a composed anchor, keeping the team focused and motivated. His dedication to team chemistry and his ‘never quit’ attitude have been the foundation of our program’s winning culture this year. Gavin truly embodies the spirit of a captain and a competitor.”
Wheeler High School offers students various opportunities beyond athletics with strong participation rates—30 percent are involved in athletics while 90 percent take part in extracurricular activities according to its official website. The school provides rigorous academic programs including honors courses and over 25 Advanced Placement classes within its curriculum https://www.cobbk12.org/wheeler. Wheeler also maintains accreditation through regional agencies and was among Georgia’s first schools with STEAM certification https://www.cobbk12.org/wheeler.
The Athletes of the Week initiative recognizes students who excel not only athletically but also academically and within their communities.
