If former Sen. David Perdue prevails as the GOP gubernatorial candidate for Georgia, he may look back at former President Donald Trump’s endorsement as the catalyst to his victory.

Perdue told FOX5 Atlanta that he was honored that Trump backed him in his bid to unseat Gov. Brian Kemp.

"I'm proud to have President Trump’s Complete & Total Endorsement," Perdue tweeted. "Georgians are tired of do-nothing, weak-kneed politicians. As governor, I’ll be a fighter, who never caves to the woke left."

Perdue has launched his campaign, which is expected to have him visiting areas throughout the state with a 30-second ad that states Purdue is an "America-first conservative outsider," according to the news station.

FOX5 Atlanta reported that Kemp has filed an ethics grievance toward Perdue when he questioned a state law that allows the current governor to raise unrestricted campaign funds.

According to Ballotpedia, Perdue will face Kemp for governor of Georgia during the Republican primary scheduled for May 24.

"David Perdue will eliminate the income tax, secure the elections, defend the Second Amendment, support our great Farmers, get crime in Atlanta and other places under control, take care of our great vets and put parents back in charge of the schools," Trump said in a statement, according to CNN.

The news site reported that when Kemp announced his campaign in December, he did so by mentioning one of the most prominent Democratic leaders in the state.

"I'm running for governor to make sure Stacey Abrams is never governor of Georgia," Perdue said in a video posted to his campaign website.
