Life University (Life U) and Chattahoochee Technical College (Chattahoochee Tech) recently collaborated to offer a presentation aimed at educating military veterans on the potential benefits of chiropractic care, particularly in alleviating PTSD symptoms. Life U D.C. students affiliated with Life Chiropractic Centers (LCC) volunteered their time to speak at Chattahoochee Tech's Marietta Campus, informing attendees about starting a chiropractic care plan.

Grace Pickering, a chiropractic student who has worked at Chattahoochee Tech’s Veterans Affairs Center, was the primary speaker. She connected with Michael Payne, the Veteran Support Coordinator at the VECTR Center (Veterans Education Career Transition Resource). Pickering emphasized how chiropractic care could complement other treatments such as talk therapy, group therapy, and medication for veterans.

During her presentation, Pickering addressed both physical and mental reasons why veterans might seek chiropractic care. Audience members cited headaches and shaking as common issues. Pickering explained that chiropractic care helps regulate the central nervous system to temper overactive fight-or-flight responses and promote better sleep. “We call them 3Ts: thoughts, traumas and toxins. When you have a stimulus that your body can’t adapt to, it starts that cascade of compensatory mechanisms,” she said.

Pickering and her fellow students also shared information about Life U student clinics, which offer low-cost or no-cost chiropractic care. “Obviously, we want to get you back to that baseline where you were without aches, pains, back pain and neck pain. But my question then becomes how well do you want to feel? Back to where you were before you had those symptoms, or do you want to get even better than that and see where you can go?” Pickering asked.

Dustin Biggerstaff, a Life U D.C. student and U.S. Marine Veteran, provided his testimony about how chiropractic care helped him recover from traumatic injuries sustained during his service. Medically retired in 2019 due to chronic compression injuries in his back, Biggerstaff experienced significant improvement through attentive chiropractic care over time. “I’m in my third year of chiropractic school. I’m hands-on with patients every day of the week, and it is one of the most fulfilling things I can do,” he said.

Life U expressed appreciation for Chattahoochee Tech, the VECTR Center, and all attendees for allowing them to share vital information on chiropractic resources. They hope future community learning discussions will continue.
