Cobb County schools held various events to honor veterans, demonstrating appreciation for their service. Activities included parades around Marietta Square and through school halls, as well as student performances of patriotic songs.
Board Chair Randy Scamihorn, a veteran himself, expressed his pride in the community's efforts. "As a veteran myself, I appreciate seeing the Cobb Schools community come together to honor those who have served. How our community values service, whether in the classroom or uniform, is another reason why I am proud to call Cobb home," he stated at Ford Elementary School's Veterans Day celebration.
Students across different schools engaged with veterans by writing letters and participating in ceremonies. At Rocky Mount Elementary, students wrote heartfelt messages such as Wynn’s: “Thank you for your service. Thank you for protecting our country. You are a great person and will be honored for your service.”
Cobb JROTC cadets and Boy Scouts played key roles by presenting colors and escorting veterans during these events. The student cadets and bands also participated in a parade through Marietta to show respect for local veterans.
Some students had personal connections with the honorees—family members who served in the military. Shallowford Elementary School student Easton shared his gratitude in a letter: “Thank you for your service and for protecting our country,” which he presented during his school's event.
Board member Brad Wheeler attended Still Elementary School's celebration, emphasizing the importance of recognizing veterans' contributions: “It's important that we let our veterans know how much we appreciate them, but it's also important for our students to see and meet them. They may not wear the uniform any longer, but they are the hometown heroes of our school communities,” he remarked.
Compton Elementary hosted an event where students performed choir pieces expressing gratitude towards veterans. A guest speaker who has served in both the Army and Marine Corps addressed attendees before a procession honoring veterans took place within the school halls.
Schools including Ford Elementary, North Cobb High School, Rocky Mount Elementary, Shallowford Falls Elementary, and Still Elementary actively participated in celebrating Veterans Day this year.
