The recent Board of Education meeting for Cobb Schools focused on initiatives to improve student safety and future opportunities. Key topics included the introduction of Vapor Wake dogs as an added safety measure and updates on career pathways at the Cobb Innovation and Technology Academy, set to open in 2026.
The board extended Superintendent Ragsdale's contract through 2028. In his remarks, Ragsdale reiterated the district's commitment to a safe and appropriate learning environment, emphasizing that book selection policies aim to prevent unrestricted access to inappropriate content. "Contrary to the false accusations of those who relentlessly criticize our district, team, students, and community, this has never been about removing particular viewpoints or experiences," he stated.
Ragsdale cited a U.S. Department of Education decision affirming local control over book selection: "...effective Jan. 24, 2025, USED has rescinded all department guidance issued under the theory that a school district's removal of age-inappropriate books from its libraries may violate civil rights laws..."
He assured parents that materials would remain appropriate for children while respecting community expectations. The district does not collect information on students' immigration status but complies with legal directives from law enforcement agencies.
Governor Kemp announced an additional $50 million for school safety in Georgia. This funding supports proactive measures like Vapor Wake dogs in schools. "As we spend over $35 million dollars on safety per year...we are confident Vapor Wake dogs will make our schools even safer," Ragsdale said.
The meeting also recognized several achievements within the district:
- Camryn Cade from Hillgrove High School was named GHSA 6A One Act Play Best Actress State Champion.
- Steven Bernal from Cobb Innovation & Technology Academy won the Heavy Equipment Operator State Dozer Championship.
- Breana O’Shea (Hendricks Elementary), Ryan Tolbert (Cooper Middle), and Laura Potts (Campbell High) were honored as Counselors of Impact at their respective school levels.
- Comprehensive Model Certification was awarded to Kemp Elementary School, Big Shanty Intermediate School, Hightower Trail Middle School, Smitha Middle School, Harrison High School, and Walton High School.
