The Cobb Board of Commissioners has received a $1.9 million grant from the Georgia Public Library System for the reconstruction of Gritters Library, according to East Cobb News.
Commissioner JoAnn Birrell expressed her gratitude toward Cobb's legislative delegation for assisting in securing the last financial component for the library's reconstruction.
“I want a shovel out there,” Birrell said, according to the Marietta Daily Journal on Twitter. “We have to have a groundbreaking to start the construction.”
The Gritters branch in Shaw Park, which opened in 1973, will be completely rebuilt, with work set to begin in December, according to East Cobb News.
The library's initial plans were for just renovation, but now a new branch will be constructed next to the current facility, East Cobb News reported. A completion date for the construction has not been specified.
The $6.8 million project is financed by the 2016 Cobb Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), which provided an initial grant of about $2.9 million from the six-year sales tax, according to a report by the Marietta Daily Journal.
