With the U.S. facing a severe blood supply shortage, the Red Cross will hold blood drives next month in Acworth.

The Red Cross said anyone interested in donating blood in October would receive a free sandwich.

“Come to give blood, platelets or plasma Oct. 1-31 and receive a link by email to claim a free Zaxby’s Signature Sandwich reward,’’ the organization said.

The Red Cross recently launched an enterprise facilitating the growth of Black blood donors to help patients with sickle cell anemia, Patch reported.

Over 100,000 U.S. citizens have sickle cell disease, with Blacks accounting for the majority of cases, Patch said.  According to the Red Cross patients often require regular blood transfusions, but may develop an immune response from blood that isn't closely matched to their own, Patch reported.

Those interested in donating can visit the locations below or search for additional Red Cross blood drives from a wider area.
