City of Acworth issued the following announcement on Nov. 17.

On November 17th, Principal Tia Amlett of Barber Middle School was named Acworth’s 2021 Citizen of the Year by the Northwest Cobb Chamber of Commerce.  Ms. Amlett was nominated by Mayor Tommy Allegood for her outstanding service to the community as well as being a strong and steadfast advocate for teachers, students, and their parents.  Ms. Amlett is an exceptional principal for Barber Middle School.  She takes the time to greet each student by name, and in most cases, she knows specific details about each student’s life. With this small gesture, Ms. Amlett shows each student that they are important and cared for. Ms. Amlett has led Barber Middle School in achieving Title 1 Reward school status for the past two school years.  During that time, Barber also achieved STEM School Certification by Cobb County School District.  This would be an outstanding achievement for any school, but the fact that Ms. Amlett led her school to make these achievements during the course of the pandemic makes it truly extraordinary. In addition to her work within the school, Ms Amlett is active in the community, and she ensures that Barber Middle School maintains strong partnerships with local businesses, the Acworth Police Department, and the City of Acworth.  Congratulations Tia!
