Education and public safety are two priorities for just about every state in the nation. Now, Gov. Brian Kemp is vowing to pay more than lip service to improve them.

Kemp announced plans to increase funding in those two areas during his fourth State of the State address, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

"My Fiscal 2023 budget proposal will include a final installment of $2,000 to finish out the largest teacher pay raise in state history — a total of $5,000 since 2019," Kemp said. "To support their heroic efforts day in and day out, I believe we as state leaders must continue to do everything we can to ensure they have the resources necessary to fulfill their mission and prepare the next generation of leaders for successful lives and careers."

Teachers aren't the only education employees who will get more money, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Kemp's proposed budget would provide a $5,000 raise for state employees, including law enforcement; a one-time $2,000 supplement for school support staff and administrators; and a one-time $1,000 supplement for bus drivers, nurses and part-time school employees.

Kemp also intends to completely fund the state's Quality Basic Education formula with a proposed $425 million, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Kemp's budget "includes an 11 percent spike in per-capita state spending that will add approximately $3 billion in funding for Georgia’s thinly stretched state government," the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute (GBPI) reported in an overview of the 2023 fiscal year budget.

The $30.2 billion spending plan translates to state spending of approximately $2,775 per resident, the GBPI reported.
