Parents at East Side Elementary School in Marietta, Georgia, are expressing outrage over a proposed logo change at a Cobb County school that some insist bears a likeness to a Nazi symbol.
A recent report by Fox 5 Atlanta highlighted concerns across the community, though the district states the design was based on a United States. Army colonel’s eagle wings.
“I was shocked, I was stunned," Stefanie Ollanove told Fox 5 Atlanta. "At first I thought it couldn’t be our school. I was very insulted by this. As a Jewish family in this school system, it took me aback."
The logo depicts the school’s mascot—an eagle— over the school’s initials "ES," while the Nazi eagle developed in the 1920s that became a symbol for white supremacists depicts an eagle holding a swastika in its talons, Fox 5 reported.
As outrage over the proposed change has quickly spread over social media, the state's second-largest school district has announced plans to delay the switch while "immediately reviewing needed changes,” according to the report.
This is not the first Cobb County schools have come under fire for antisemitism.
In June, a group began posting hot pink billboards around Atlanta challenging people to fight antisemitism, partly in response to incidents last school year, Fox 5 reported. Graffiti depicting swastikas was found in two Cobb County high schools during the Jewish High Holidays. Several Cobb middle school students were also disciplined earlier this year for sharing antisemitic imagery on social media.
