The Cobb County School District has been recognized for its exceptional performance in math education, with 44 of its schools being named "Georgia Math Leaders" by Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods. This accolade is awarded to schools that have shown remarkable success in math achievement and leadership in fostering student progress.
Superintendent Woods visited Smitha Middle School to extend his congratulations to the schools for their dedication to math education. This ceremony follows a previous event in the fall, where Cobb schools were lauded for literacy accomplishments. Woods stressed the importance of recognizing growth in student achievement, stating, "The banners and ribbons are designed to recognize growth. Growth is extremely important. We may not be at the promised land of proficiency yet, but it’s important to acknowledge that we are moving in the right direction.”
He also acknowledged the collective efforts of school staff, including teachers, administrators, cafeteria workers, custodians, and support personnel, for their roles in fostering an environment where students can succeed.
The 44 recognized Cobb schools have shown significant achievements in student growth and high proficiency levels. For instance, Pearson Middle School recorded the highest growth with math score improvements reaching 45.2 points. Lindley Middle School followed with a 40.9-point gain. Among elementary schools, Eastvalley Elementary achieved the highest growth among fifth graders, marking a 22.5-point increase.
Middle schools such as Griffin and Floyd also demonstrated outstanding performance, with Griffin recording a 25.7-point rise and Floyd a 24.4-point increase in scores. Furthermore, five middle schools, including Betty Gray Middle and East Cobb Middle, boasted a perfect pass rate for students undertaking the high school portion of the test.
At the high school level, Kennesaw Mountain High School achieved notable success by seeing its scores increase by 30.6 points, the largest growth among high schools.
In additional commendations, Ford Elementary School received the prestigious Flagship Banner, which honors its exceptional support for military families. Superintendent Woods highlighted the significance of this award, stating that Ford Elementary exemplifies commitment to ensuring a stable, caring, and high-quality educational environment for military-connected students.
The recognition of these 44 schools underscores Cobb County School District's ongoing commitment to improving math literacy and supporting its diverse student population through collaborative efforts from its dedicated staff.
