Dodgen Middle School's Science Olympiad team has achieved first place at the Regional Tournament held at Georgia State University, securing its spot for the State Tournament on April 19 at the University of Georgia. The competition was fierce, with 21 teams from 15 different middle schools, including McCleskey Middle and Campbell Middle, participating for a chance to advance.

The Science Olympiad involves 23 STEM events that challenge students in areas such as earth science, chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering. Dodgen's program, which has been strong since 2001, is a consistent contender in the state, having won regionals multiple times, including the last two years. The school's history shows notable achievements, such as placing first or second in the past 11 state tournaments (except for 2020), allowing them to compete at Nationals alongside teams from across the country and Japan.

The program is led by Coach Barbara Kappel, who has successfully guided the team to consecutive national appearances. "I am so proud of the hard work and commitment our students have put in this year to continue Dodgen’s Science Olympiad success!" said Mrs. Kappel.

Dodgen fields three full teams due to the program's popularity, with each team consisting of fifteen students competing in up to four different events. Students invest time conducting research, building and testing devices, and refining skills with support from parents and community volunteers.

The team is set to participate in the state competition with hopes of securing another national appearance. If successful, they will compete at the University of Nebraska in late May.

Congratulations were extended to the Dodgen Science Olympiad team, Coach Kappel, and the supporting community who contributed to this achievement.
