The Georgia Department of Education has recognized 44 schools in Cobb County as state math leaders. These schools have demonstrated exceptional achievement or growth in mathematics across various grade levels.

The recognition highlights the importance of mathematics in education and future careers. Schools were selected based on student performance at the Proficient Learner level or above on the Georgia Milestones mathematics assessments. This year's Math Leader Awards emphasized numeracy skills, particularly in fifth and eighth grades, requiring higher growth from schools with lower achievement levels.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods praised the efforts of these schools, saying, “Congratulations to our first-ever Math Leader schools! The skill of numeracy is an essential one, both as students progress through their K-12 education and in their futures. These schools and their educators, students, families, and communities have worked hard to implement the new K-12 Mathematics Standards and prepare all students for life. I commend them on their outstanding work.”

Dr. April Aldridge, GaDOE Deputy Superintendent of Teaching & Learning, also expressed her admiration: “What a great opportunity to celebrate and recognize the outstanding accomplishments of students and educators in the state of Georgia. Georgia’s new K-12 Mathematics Standards have been implemented with intentionality and a commitment to expand opportunities for students. We applaud the hard work that has resulted in the accomplishments recognized by the Math Leader designation.”

The success seen from these initiatives is reflected in improved scores on six out of seven tests within the 2024-24 Georgia Milestones assessments. Notably high growth was observed with eight-point increases in eighth-grade math and high-school Algebra.

Schools receiving this honor include Addison Elementary School for third-grade growth; Allatoona High School for high school growth; Awtrey Middle School for high school achievement; Bells Ferry Elementary School for fifth-grade gateway growth; among others listed.

Superintendent Woods plans to visit these recognized Math Leaders throughout fall to extend his congratulations personally.
