Dr. Katrina Shirley, an experienced educator with nearly two decades in the field, has been appointed as the new principal of Hayes Elementary School. Her career began in the classroom, teaching second, third, and fifth grades at Powder Springs Elementary School and Kemp Elementary School. She then served as assistant principal at Kennesaw Elementary School and Pitner Elementary School.
"As principal at Hayes, I plan to collaborate with teachers to further propel our students towards becoming innovative leaders, thinkers, and problem-solvers who have the knowledge and skills to succeed in an ever-changing world," Dr. Shirley stated. She emphasized her admiration for the dedication of Hayes teachers to fostering critical thinking through STEM-based learning experiences.
Dr. Shirley also commended the success of the Leader in Me program at Hayes, which promotes leadership skills and character development among students.
In a recent interview, Dr. Shirley shared her enthusiasm for joining the Hayes community: "I am thrilled to join the Hayes Elementary community, a unique environment of dedicated teachers, enthusiastic learners, and supportive community members who nurture our future leaders."
She explained her perspective on student success: "To me, student success means recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of each individual...By providing an environment where students can thrive by overcoming challenges and pursuing personal goals."
Dr. Shirley highlighted the important role parents and the community play in supporting student success: "Parents and the community play a vital role...Collaboration is key to student success!"
Regarding her passion for education, she said: "What I like most about being an elementary school principal is the pure JOY of working with children...One of my favorite memories as an educator is when my former elementary students...took time to reach out."
Outside school hours, Dr. Shirley enjoys spending time outdoors and engaging in various hobbies: "On weekends, you can usually spot me running around Swift Cantrell Park...When I am not exercising..."
