The Cobb Schools Board of Education began the year by discussing upcoming improvements funded by Ed-SPLOST, a community-supported initiative. This program will facilitate various projects across the district without resorting to expensive bond financing, thanks to the district's strong financial management.
Board Chair David Chastain highlighted the importance of these investments, stating, "The continued support for Ed-SPLOST allows us to maintain our high-quality schools with projects like these." The upgrades are crucial for addressing over one billion dollars in school building needs.
At Bells Ferry Elementary School, significant upgrades and beautification efforts are planned. Pope High School will undergo renovations such as front entry improvements and athletic facility enhancements, with completion expected by November 2025. South Cobb and Sprayberry High Schools will receive stadium upgrades by May 2025.
Superintendent Ragsdale informed the board about the removal of two books from general circulation due to inappropriate content for minors. The books are “Triangles” by Ellen Hopkins and “A Stolen Life” by Jaycee Dugard. Ragsdale explained that this decision aims to ensure a safe environment for students and prevent normalization of child sexualization.
In response to Georgia House Bill 581, which could impact school funding, the Cobb County School District has decided to opt out to preserve educational quality. The district plans three public hearings as part of this process.
The board also recognized several student achievements: Mia DeMartino from Allatoona High School won Best Actress at the GHSA 6A One Act Play competition; Osborne High School's JROTC Raider team became state champions; Pope High School's girls flag football team won the GHSA 5A championship; and McEachern High School's girls flag football team claimed the GHSA 6A title.
