Earlier this month, Harrison High School hosted the inaugural Olivia Kate's Path 5K, commemorating Olivia Pugh, a student who tragically passed away in December 2023. Her parents, Tara and Randy Pugh, organized the event to honor her memory and establish a scholarship in her name.
The event drew 692 participants and many supporters on a brisk Saturday morning. Attendees included Harrison students, family members, and runners from metro Atlanta and as far as Ohio and Texas. Virtual participants from across the country also contributed. Twenty local businesses sponsored the event.
"The turnout was unbelievable and greater than we imagined for the first year," said Tara Pugh. "We are so grateful for so many people...who came to remember Olivia and support her memorial scholarship."
Olivia excelled academically and athletically at Harrison High School. She maintained a GPA over 4.0 while participating in multiple sports and clubs. Her choice to be an organ donor saved four lives.
"Kindness is the one word that most people mention when talking about Olivia," Ms. Pugh continued.
Proceeds from the race will fund the Olivia Kate Pugh Strength and Shield Scholarship for exceptional Harrison seniors who demonstrate hard work, kindness, and joy.
"Olivia was such a special student at Harrison, and we miss her dearly," stated Principal Jeff Milton.
The event's name reflects Olivia's initials and love of athletics. The official t-shirt design included symbols representing aspects of her life.
"Olivia was such a remarkable young lady in so many ways," remarked Athletic Director Wes Ellis.
Despite their loss, the Pugh family expressed gratitude for community support: "Your support has been greater than anything we could have imagined."
