Georgia's Senate voted unanimously at 55-0 to temporarily suspend the state tax on gasoline as prices continue to rise across the country.
Gov. Brian Kemp signed the bill into law shortly after the Senate advanced it, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. The bill had already been advanced by the Georgia House of Representatives with another unanimous vote at 150-0.
"I'm looking forward to signing this into law and to putting money back into the pockets of hardworking Georgians!" Kemp said in a tweet. "We appreciate all in the Senate who voted with us on this important measure."
As the war in Ukraine continues to rage and gasoline prices across the country continue to tick up, House Bill 304 seeks to suspend the tax through May 31, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
"On behalf of 11 million Georgians, thank you," Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, president of the Georgia Senate, said as reported by 11 Alive.
House Bill 304 would also apply to state taxes on gas for aviation, liquefied petroleum gas and fuels such as compressed natural gas, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Kemp said he is grateful for the bipartisan support for the measure.
"Because of our strong, fiscally conservative budgeting, I'm confident we will be able to provide relief to hardworking Georgians," Kemp said in a tweet. "Both in the form of a tax refund and lower gas taxes."
