Earlier in November, four students from Cobb Middle School celebrated their selection as recipients of the Georgia REACH Scholarship. The ceremony, held by the Cobb Schools Foundation, marked a significant step in their educational journeys.
The scholarship recipients are Alayah Kinard and Irving Mendoza Leyva from Lindley Middle School, McKinley Hooker from Palmer Middle School, and Za'Riyah Bartley from Pine Mountain Middle School. These eighth graders were surrounded by family members, school principals, and community supporters as they committed to maintaining academic standards through high school with the support of the scholarship.
The REACH Georgia Scholarship Program was established statewide in 2012 to assist students from low-income backgrounds. Eligible rising eighth graders attending partnered schools in Georgia can apply for this scholarship based on academic potential, financial need, and commitment to success. The program gives special consideration to first-generation college students and those showing improvements in grades and behavior.
For each student selected in Cobb County, the Cobb Schools Foundation raises $1,000 while REACH Georgia provides additional financial support. During the ceremony, parents joined their children in signing a contract that includes commitments to maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and meet regularly with mentors and academic coaches.
Superintendent Chris Ragsdale attended alongside members of the Cobb Schools Foundation, school leaders, counselors, and social workers to celebrate this achievement. The event underscored the importance of having a clear path to college with community backing.
The Cobb Schools Foundation continues its mission as the philanthropic arm of the Cobb County School District by providing resources necessary for student success.
