Osborne High School students are providing free tax preparation services for local community members through the IRS's VITA (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance) program. Since 2003, students have prepared nearly 5,000 tax returns, saving taxpayers thousands in filing fees. The VITA program at Osborne is funded by grants from the United Way of Greater Atlanta, which receives support from the IRS. Osborne is the only high school in Georgia with this program.

According to Michael Devault, co-chair of Osborne's Business Education Department, VITA centers are located throughout metro Atlanta, but Osborne stands out as the sole high school participant. Devault, a teaching veteran of 27 years, has been involved with VITA for 23 years.

Students participating in Osborne’s program must pass three IRS certification tests before working on tax returns, which are reviewed by staff. They also handle appointment scheduling, translations, and document management. Katy Hunt, Business Education Co-Chair, mentioned that despite initial disinterest, students quickly learn the intricacies of tax preparation and engage in discussions about taxes with peers and family.

Outside of tax preparation, students gain skills in entrepreneurship and Microsoft Office as part of their curriculum. They also learn customer service by interacting with clients, an aspect Devault identifies as crucial to the educational experience. The program attracts the attention of prospective employers, who value the skills cultivated through this initiative.

Katy Hunt emphasized the development of effective communication, detail orientation, and reflexive skills. She highlighted the importance of real-world application in student engagement and growth, making the program beneficial for skill development.

Both Devault and Hunt see the program as a means of building confidence in students, preparing them for future employment and broader real-world challenges.
