The WATCH D.O.G.S. program at Varner Elementary School in Cobb County has seen significant growth and support, according to teacher Tony Tesmer. The initiative, which stands for Dads Of Great Students, encourages father figures to actively participate in the school day through various activities. Tesmer noted that before COVID-19, nearly 100 dads were involved, and after restarting in 2022 with help from veteran participants, the program has continued to strengthen.

This year, over 200 fathers attended the open house and orientation at Varner Elementary. Although other schools in Cobb have similar programs, Varner's is notably well-supported. WATCH D.O.G.S., a national program based in Dallas, Texas, involves fathers in activities such as physical education, art, music, STEM & Innovation classes, recess supervision, reading sessions with students, hallway monitoring, and lunch assistance.

At Varner Elementary specifically, WATCH D.O.G.S. have contributed by painting and upgrading lighting for the front office and teacher's lounge. They also completed a landscaping project at the school's entrance and assisted with evening events. Javonda Harrison, PTA President at Varner Elementary and parent of a student there stated: "Their presence makes a difference for all the students here."

Research suggests that increased male presence in elementary schools can enhance students' sense of safety and academic performance. L.B. Harrison shared his thoughts on this aspect: "It's bringing back community." He emphasized their commitment to supporting both their children and the entire school community.

Mr. Tesmer has been involved with the WATCH D.O.G.S. program since its inception at Varner alongside Principal Althea Singletary who joined him at the school in 2014. Reflecting on how well-integrated this initiative is within their existing framework of family involvement she said: "Varner is a family...WATCH D.O.G.S is not an add-on; it is a natural outgrowth of what we already have."

Drexel Cook serves as Lead D.O.G or 'D.O.G Father' having participated since his daughter—now a senior—was an elementary student there himself committed beyond personal benefits remarking: "It's not just about my kids but also for all other kids." He highlighted how vital it was for those able to engage meaningfully across diverse connections among students without consistent male role models present otherwise during typical hours due various reasons affecting availability among others involved.

L.B further added insights into parental engagement dynamics saying: "It's mind-blowing...Usually difficult getting parents especially dads involved but Varner doesn't have that." Mr.Tesmer concluded by praising collaborative efforts across different stakeholders stating,"We are proof you can have it all...There's nothing this school can't do."
