In recent years, physical education has evolved from focusing solely on physical endurance to emphasizing skills-based learning. This modern approach encourages students to develop motor skills at their own pace.
David Owen explored these changes in a discussion with Elizabeth Godbee, Cobb's Supervisor of Health and Physical Education, during an episode of The Inside Scoop. Godbee highlighted the adaptation of PE to meet contemporary challenges while maintaining the significance of physical activities like swinging a bat or catching a ball in cognitive development. "This approach contributes to academic success by enhancing fine motor skills, which can translate to better handwriting and improved learning outcomes," she stated.
Godbee explained that PE teachers now emphasize key skills and vocabulary. For example, they teach students how to describe and perform "isotonic" and "isometric" stretching. This not only broadens students' knowledge but also inspires interest in careers related to athletic training. Fitness goals are personalized for each student, with specific assessments used to measure individual progress rather than direct comparisons between students.
Beyond PE classes, physical activity is available across the District through after-school programs and morning intramurals offering activities such as jump rope, dance, and various sports. Godbee encouraged parents to support their children's physical education at home with family-oriented exercises and activities. She emphasized that the long-term goal of PE and health education is for students to internalize these skills and habits for a healthier lifestyle into adulthood.
