Cobb Schools' Athlete of the Week program recognizes outstanding student-athletes for their achievements in sports, academics, and community involvement. Supported by BSN Sports, this week's honorees are Melanie Presnal from Osborne and Gavin Huey from Pope.
Melanie Presnal is making waves in wrestling as she approaches the individual state title competition. Recently, she became the Cobb County Champion at 155 pounds and won River Ridge's Queen of the Castle Tournament. A senior athlete, Melanie contributes significantly both on and off the mat. She is an active participant in the POPP Protect the Dream program and a member of the Cardinal Athlete Leadership Council.
"Melanie has such a positive impact on the Osborne culture; she is an authentic leader who treats others with respect," said Athletic Director Ron Boggs. "She even attended our 2025 HOF induction ceremony to meet and greet the attendees!"
Boggs also noted her competitive spirit: "Melanie competes hard in everything she does. Kit Cummings [from POPP] consistently mentioned how impressed he was with Melanie’s leadership."
Gavin Huey excels in swimming as his team prepares for the state meet at Georgia Tech. He recently claimed victory in the region championship for both the 100-yard Fly and 500-yard Freestyle events. His contributions helped his team secure second place in the 200 Medley Relay and first place in the 400 Free Relay. Academically accomplished, Gavin plans to attend Georgia Tech to study Computer Engineering.
"He is the emotional leader for the boys and one of our team captains," stated Head Coach Zachary Schreer. "He was our MVP last season and is leading again this year. Gavin broke the 100-fly team record this year, so I cannot overstate how much he has contributed to the team."
Pope AD Josh Mathews praised him further: "Gavin is an exceptional student-athlete," he said. "He brings a humble confidence as a student and in his athletic endeavors."
Congratulations go out to Melanie Presnal and Gavin Huey for their exemplary performances on behalf of Osborne and Pope schools.
