Dodgen Middle School's Science Olympiad Team has secured a first-place finish at the Regional Tournament hosted by Georgia State University. This victory grants them entry into the State Tournament, which is scheduled for April 19 at the University of Georgia.

The competition featured 21 teams from 15 different middle schools, including Cobb County's McCleskey Middle and Campbell Middle. Participants were challenged in 23 STEM events that ranged from building structures to demonstrating knowledge in various scientific disciplines.

Since its inception in 2001, Dodgen’s Science Olympiad program has consistently performed well, securing top positions at regional levels multiple times. In the last eleven state tournaments, excluding 2020, Dodgen has placed either first or second, enabling them to compete nationally against teams from across the United States and Japan. The team aims to maintain their streak of national appearances under Coach Barbara Kappel’s guidance.

“I am so proud of the hard work and commitment our students have put in this year to continue Dodgen’s Science Olympiad success!” expressed Mrs. Kappel regarding her team's achievements.

Dodgen fields three full teams annually, each comprising fifteen students who participate in multiple events. These students prepare extensively with support from parents and community volunteers, dedicating significant time during weekdays and weekends.

Beyond competition, Science Olympiad fosters collaboration among young scientists and engineers. Older students mentor younger teammates, enhancing their confidence and skills.

As they gear up for the state competition, Dodgen’s school community rallies behind them with hopes of advancing to Nationals at the University of Nebraska later this year.
